Observational Drawing / Figure Drawing

I believe that the most important skill set for anyone that works in the visual arts is drawing. Even at its most base execution, it is the simplest way to convey an idea, thought or expression. Drawing is a skill set that develops over a long period of time and one that requires constant exercise. The best artists in music, performance and sports all continue the development of their craft in their respective “off seasons”. The best never stop training and thus always remain at the ready when opportunity or inspiration strikes. I have found over the years the best way to maintain this discipline is figure drawing. The human figure is one of the most complex forms to draw and so it is the perfect subject matter to work with on an ongoing basis. For my practice, these drawings are about many different things – capturing a fleeting expression, a likeness, trying new techniques, materials and most importantly just engaging in the act of drawing.
