“Magnetic”
Magnetic” 2009, cast Parian, 37”h 29”w 1.5”d, Edition of: 26 Sculptures (A-Z), 5 Artist Proofs and 4 collaborator’s Proofs. This sculpture is the first editioned piece created by Mark T Smith and his first sculpture. The process to create this artwork started with a maquette at 100% of the scale of this final editioned piece. This maquette was cast in a foundry and that mold begot the result you see here in this installation. The bull is an icon that the artist works with often, as a vessel for his thoughts on the masculine. The piece is cast in crushed marble.
This piece has a companion piece entitled “Charisma”. This foray into three-dimensional works was cut short by the United States financial crisis of 2008. This crisis was the start of a decade where the artist retreated from public life almost completely, with a few commissions being the only time his works were viewed in public.
